The present invention regards a process for preparing α, γ-dichlorohydrin, starting directly from glycerol and acyl chlorides added in a stoichiometric amount. The reaction takes place without having to supply gaseous hydrochloric acid, which is produced in situ. Acyl chlorides perform in this case the dual role of reagent and catalyst. The corresponding carboxylic acid is obtained as by-product, which can then be chlorinated and re-used.
